Jasper Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
What are the Common Problems that Armadillos Cause?

Armadillos are unique and interesting creatures, but they are still nuisance animals that can be responsible for a wide variety of damages in and around homes. While armadillos are intriguing to some, not everyone is a fan of them, especially homeowners, gardeners, and farmers. They have claws that comes in handy for digging and burrowing, all throughout the yard. Armadillos have minimal fat storage and a low metabolic rate meaning that cold weather is their enemy. They live in warmer habitats and they prefer to sleep in burrows in the ground to help maintain their warmth. They are extremely motivated to find shelter and food (grubs and insects) and will destroy your lawn and gardens in the process. They can even destabilize tree root systems and building foundations with their tunnels. It does not take very large for them to dig up a large amount of land. On top of their destructive tendencies, armadillos have been known to be carriers of mycobacterium leprae, which causes leprosy. They can also carry tapeworms and salmonella in their feces.

Garden Damages Caused by Armadillos

Most armadillo damage occurs as a result of their rooting in lawns, golf courses, vegetable gardens and flower beds. Their rooting and burrowing behavior can also cause damage in pastures and affect livestock. As they search for food, they dig shallow holes in the ground. These shallow holes, 1 to 3 inches deep and 3 to 5 inches wide, are characteristic signs of armadillo activity. Armadillos also uproot flowers and other vegetation while searching for food. They also cause damage when they burrow under foundations, driveways and other structures.

Armadillo can Carry Bacteria that Causes Leprosy

Leprosy is caused by infection with the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. It mainly affects the skin, eyes, nose and peripheral nerves. There are many diseases that are associated with armadillos. They can carry the mycobacterium leprae known to cause leprosy. The armadillos can transmit the leprosy when they attack using their claws.

They Can Carry Rabies

They can carry the rabies and it is the disease known to paralyze any animal that it has affected including the humans. The rabies can only be transmitted through the bites by armadillos but because they bite rarely and it does not have too much risk for humans and pets when it comes to the rabies.

They Can Destroy Bird Nests

Although armadillos occasionally destroy the nests of ground-nesting birds in their search for food, there is some disagreement as to whether or not they actually eat the eggs.

They can Affect Other Animals with Tapeworms

The armadillos can also affect animals with tapeworms. They are also known to carry salmonella, which can be transmitted through fecal matter. Even if the armadillos do not bite, they are risky to your cat or dog because of the diseases they carry around. When they fear that they are threatened they may claw. Meanwhile, if you have armadillos in your yard, you may be tempted to get rid of them on your own but this may not be a good idea since you will be putting your home or your family at risk if not handled properly.
